Interactive Bat Protocol

The Protocol provides a unique way of finding your way through the 'maze' of legislation and policy relating to the protection of bats.

It has been designed to identify the key issues to be considered at each stage of the planning application process.

As well as being available online a pdf version is available for download on the Protocol's front page or through the link to the right.

This flow diagram and its associated content arose directly from an initiative by the Planning Officers’s Society for Wales (POSW) and their aim to produce clear guidance for planning officers when determining planning applications where bat species (e.g. European protected species) are involved. As such, this project has been overseen by a POSW Working Group chaired by Helen Winsall from Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.

The content and flow diagram have been prepared by Mike Oxford of the Association of Local Government Ecologists and Lisa Hundt of the Bat Conservation Trust. They've had substantial input from Sandra Wells, Jean Mathews and Karen Maddock-Jones of the Countryside Council for Wales and Brigid Primrose of Scottish Natural Heritage. The authors also wish to thank Penny Simpson (Chair of the UK Environmental Law Association and an Associate with DLA Piper) for her invaluable insight and input over the legislative context for European protected species.

The production of the Bat Protocol was funded by the Countryside Council for Wales. Graphic design and animation was created by Buffalo Design
