List of UK BAP Priority Species

The Governments of all four UK administrations have now adopted the recommendations of experts and published the UK list of priority species and habitats in August 2007. This list is he result of the most comprehensive analysis ever undertaken in the UK. It contains 1150 species and 65 habitats that have been listed as priorities for conservation action under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP. It is an important reference source and will be the focus for conservation action across the UK over the next decade.

Publication of the English list satisfies the requirements of Section 41 of The Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act (2006)

The list contains 943 of the total 1150 UK BAP species and is the definitive reference for all statutory and non-statutory bodies involved in operations that affect biodiversity in England. It should also be used to guide decision-makers such as local and regional authorities, in implementing their statutory duties to have regard to the conservation of biodiversity in the exercise of their normal functions.

Scottish Biodiversity List (Species & Habitats of Principal Importance in Scotland)

Publication of the Scottish list satisfies the requirements of Section 2(4) of The Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act (2004).

The list contains a large proportion of the total 1150 UK BAP species and is the definitive reference for all statutory and non-statutory bodies involved in operations that affect biodiversity in Scotland. It should also be used to guide decision-makers such as local and regional authorities, in implementing their statutory duties to have regard to the conservation of biodiversity in the exercise of their normal functions.

The Northern Ireland Biodiversity Group has developed lists of Northern Ireland priority species (which require conservation action).

 
The list contains 271 of the total 1150 UK BAP species and is the definitive reference for all statutory and non-statutory bodies involved in operations that affect biodiversity in Northern Ireland. It should also be used to guide decision-makers such as local and regional authorities.

The list contains 503 of the total 1150 UK BAP species with an additional 33 specific to Wales. The list is the definitive reference for all statutory and non-statutory bodies involved in operations that affect biodiversity in. It should also be used to guide decision-makers such as local and regional authorities, in implementing their statutory duties to have regard to the conservation of biodiversity in the exercise of their normal functions.
